Peer Counseling Program goals

A partnership has been created between the HSF Peer Counseling Program, UCLA, East Los Angeles College, and Los Angeles Valley College. Each of the peer counseling sites will serve as service hubs for outreach by UCLA students to Latino community college students. The goals of the HSF & UCLA Peer Counseling Program include:

  • Providing Latino community college students with resources surrounding academic support, scholarships and financial aid, and skills required to transfer into a four-year higher education institution.
  • Increasing the number of Latino community college students transferring to four-year institutions.
  • Increasing the retention rates of Latino college students.
  • Increasing the number of Latino students graduating with baccalaureate degrees.

Program Structure

HSF will support peer counseling activities in partnership with UCLA, East Los Angeles College, and Los Angeles Valley College for a period of two years; specifically targeting two cohorts of 20-25 Latino community college students. All Peer Counselor activities are jointly supervised by HSF and partner schools. The specific details of each program are as follows:

Community College Transfer Initiative: HSF recruits and trains two UCLA students to serve as counselors/mentors to Latino students at East Los Angeles College and Los Angeles Valley College. Each Peer Counselor meets individually with their cohort of 20-25 students regularly at the community college during the academic year to discuss their academic and personal preparation for transfer to a four-year higher education institution. The Peer Counselors will also work together to offer group workshops on college readiness to the larger student population at both of the community colleges.

HSF Scholar Chapters: UCLA Scholar Chapter members will support UCLA Peer Counselors by providing programming, such as college-readiness workshops and college tours to the student cohorts, in order to promote positive transfer and retention rates and increased graduation rates of Latino college students.
