Seth grew up in Fresno, California. As the child of accomplished parents, both of whom are graduates of UCLA, becoming a Bruin was always a dream of Seth’s. However, like many young, black teenagers, his struggle to find a sense of purpose and motivation spilled over into and his effected his academic work and left him feeling like pursuing higher education was not the right path for him. The events of September 11, 2001 changed all of that. Overcome by a sense of duty and a desire to find motivation and discipline, Seth enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for six years – over four of which were spent in the Middle East – as a Persian-Farsi linguist and cryptologist. After six years of service to his country, Seth left the Navy and enrolled at Santa Monica College with the intention of transferring to UCLA. While at SMC, he worked as a student mentor to other student-veterans, served as the student representative to the Board of Trustees, and worked with SMC’s Scholars Program to which he actively recruited underrepresented students. Seth graduated from SMC in 2010 with an AA in Liberal Arts, which was also the year he realized his childhood dream of becoming a Bruin. In just 18 months at UCLA, Seth earned his BA in Middle Eastern and North African Studies and a minor in Political Science. He graduated in December of 2011 with College Honors. Following graduation, Seth worked as an intern at the State Dept.’s Foreign Service Institute. He was then awarded the Scoville Peace Fellowship and is currently serving as the Scoville Fellow at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Washington, D.C. Seth has been accepted to an MA International Affairs program at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School where he plans to focus on international security issues. He hopes to in government or in the private sector in a capacity that will allow him to have an impact U.S. foreign policy and national security strategy.
