K-12 Teaching

My name is Ana K. Soltero Lopez, and I am the Graduate Mentor for K-12 teaching and AB 540 students. I am also a first year doctoral student in the division of Urban Schooling in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS).

I was born in beautiful Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, but raised in Inglewood, California. I received my undergraduate education at UCSB where I majored in Psychology and Chicana/o Studies and minored in Education and Spanish. This past academic year, I completed my Masters at UCLA in the division of Social Sciences and Comparative Education with a Race and Ethnic Studies emphasis.

My pathway to where I am now has not been an easy one. My experiences and struggles throughout the educational pipeline have had an enormous influence on my academic and work endeavors. Having attended inner city public schools, I quickly discovered the lack of crucial materials and resources needed for college preparation. Due to these difficulties and challenges, I committed myself and discovered a passion for helping students who have similar experiences to my own. I have four years of experience mentoring/tutoring/peer advising students in K-16. I have worked for a variety of outreach programs with the hopes of getting students better informed about their educational rights and what it takes to prepare for college and graduate school admission.

Some of my research interests include access, equity, race relations, immigration, language issues, and educational policy. In particular, I am interested in documenting and voicing the concerns/frustrations of the millions of Students of Color at the margins of society who our schooling system is failing.

If you are interested in K-12 teaching and want to know what it takes to get into graduate programs, come in and see me. I am more than happy to listen and answer any questions/concerns you might have. I look forward to meeting you!
