Welcome to AAP Mentoring Programs! My name is Dr. La'Tonya Rease Miles, although most people call me "LT." I am from Alexandria, Virginia, which is a suburb just south of Washington, DC, and I graduated from the infamous TC Williams High School, which is the subject of the movie, Remember the Titans.
I am the first person in my immediate family to graduate from a four-year university (my mom is the second - go Mom!). I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Howard University before finally graduating from the University of Maryland at College Park, so you could say that I have inadvertently specialized in transferring.
I was one of those people who never wanted to settle on a major: English, history, women's studies, art history, public policy-they all interested me. Eventually, I needed to finish school, so I settled on a degree in English Language and Literature, which allowed me to combine several of these disciplines. I received my Ph.D. in English from UCLA, and my dissertation centers around three overlapping topics: black masculinity, racial authenticity and basketball.
Long ago and far away, I used to have free time, but now I spend my weekends hanging out with my husband, Rob, and our two children, Jabari and Zoe. My favorite color is orange and my favorite movie of all time is The Godfather. I am passionate about NBA basketball, "Dawson's Creek," and lemon poppy seed muffins from The Coffee Bean. Come talk to me about any of the above and more!
