Welcome to Covel Tutorials, where you can receive free academic support!  Covel Tutorial Services, staffed by carefully selected and trained peer tutors, offer UCLA students individual and small group tutoring aimed at developing critical thinking and independent learning. 

Math/Science Tutorials

Covel Math/Science Tutorials, 230 Covel Commons, (310) 206-6965, offers tutoring for selected introductory math/science courses (such as Mathematics 1, 3A, 3B, 3C, 31A, 31B, 32A; Physics 6A, 6B, 1A, 1B; Life Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4; and Chemistry 14A, 14B, 14C, 14D, 20A, 20B, 30A, 30B, 153A). Undergraduate tutors, chosen for their communication skills as well as their academic excellence, meet with the students in weekly small group sessions.  In this informal setting, students can ask questions, test their mastery of concepts and improve their problem solving skills and test-taking strategies.  Students must request tutoring at Covel Commons, in person, during the first week of instruction.  Sign-up/registration times will be announced in the classes tutored.  Sign-up/registration is usually held from 12 to 4 pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during the first week of Fall Quarter and on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during the first week of Winter and Spring Quarters in Covel 230.

Composition/ESL Tutorials

Covel Composition Tutorials, 228 Covel Commons, (310) 206-1491, offers individual assistance to students enrolled in English 2, 3, and 4 and to students writing papers for other UCLA courses.  The Composition Lab is staffed by trained undergraduate peer tutors who have been recommended by faculty for their excellent writing skills and their ability to relate well to other students.  The tutors can help students at any stage of the writing process, from generating and organizing ideas to polishing final drafts.  They can also help students strengthen essay exam skills and improve reading comprehension and efficiency.

Covel ESL Tutorials, 228 Covel Commons, (310) 206-1491, assists non-native speakers of English with English grammar, idioms, pronunciation, listening comprehension, and composition.  Priority is given to students enrolled in English as a Second Language courses. 

To make an appointment for Composition/ESL tutoring, call (310) 206-1491, Monday through Thursday, 9:00AM to 9:00PM, Friday 9:00AM to 5:00PM or come to the Composition/ESL Lab in 228 Covel Commons.  Appointments are required.

Limited drop-in tutoring is available Monday through Thursday from 7:00PM to 9:00PM, on a first come first serve basis.

Tutorials for Student Athletes

Tutorials for Student Athletes, 209 Covel Commons, (310) 206-8124, provides individual and small group tutoring for eligible student athletes.  Most tutoring is offered in the evenings to accommodate team practice schedules.  Courses tutored vary according to student requests.  Trained undergraduate and graduate student tutors help students improve their learning skills and test taking strategies in the process of mastering course material.  To receive tutoring, eligible student athletes must sign up within the first weeks of instruction.

Becoming a Tutor 

Math/Science and Composition/ESL Tutorials hire tutors once a year in Spring Quarter.  The applications are usually made available in February or early March, and the deadline is around the second week of Spring Quarter.  Specific information will be posted on this page in February of each year.
