Milestones in Innovation

  • The Freshman Cluster Program celebrates ten years (1998-2007) of providing UCLA’s freshmen with yearlong interdisciplinary courses. More than 12,000 freshmen have enrolled in these demanding interdisciplinary sequences.

  • UCLA’s restructured General Education curriculum commemorates seven years (2000-07) rooted in three foundational areas -- Arts and Humanities, Society and Culture, and Scientific Foundations -- that are required of all undergraduates entering UCLA.

  • The Fiat Lux Freshman Seminar Program completes its fifth year (2002-07) and this year will offer its 1,000th seminar -- all of which are designed to promote informed dialogue between students and faculty in small-class settings.

  • The Academic Advancement Program (AAP) commemorates more than 35 years (1971-2007) of promoting access, equity, and academic excellence for UCLA students in all fields.

  • UCLA’s Undergraduate Research Scholars Program will soon reach its 10th anniversary (1999-2008). This year more than 200 students received competitive scholarships that support their engagement in research and scholarly projects representing all areas of campus.

  • The Honors Collegium recently celebrated 25 years (1981-2006) of offering small honors classes that encourage intellectual exchange among students and faculty, and provide opportunities for exploring challenging ideas in an informal class setting.

  • Celebrating 30 years of service, the Office of Instructional Development (OID) has awarded over 900 major grants to faculty for the developed or improvement of courses and curricula through its Instructional Improvement Program.
