Minors

Once you have selected a major, consider applying for a minor to get involved with the communities of Los Angeles.

The Civic Engagement Minor is the only one of its kind in the country, and includes an internship as well as a capstone research project on a policy issue. Students create an individualized study plan around their interests and goals.

The Disability Studies Minor includes a two-quarter internship and a capstone project. Students who want to participate in off-campus courses should also consider the Urban and Regional Studies Minor or the Public Affairs Minor.
Civic Engagement Minor

What is Civic Engagement?
Civic Engagement includes both an awareness of public issues and active participation with community organizations.

Students who are civically engaged apply what they have learned and generate new knowledge across disciplines through research and scholarship. Through these partnerships, UCLA develops tomorrow’s leaders for a diverse democracy.

About the Minor
The Civic Engagement Minor can be paired with any major and is intended for highly-motivated students of any ideological perspective who are committed to service learning, internships and research on public policy issues.

It provides students the opportunity to study theoretical frameworks for community building, governance and the use of civic resources.

Students in the minor explore traditions of service in our democracy as well as key concepts of social capital and civil society. To enroll, students must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher. The curriculum includes:
  • One lower division course (4 or 5 units)
  • Upper division core course (4 units)
  • Upper division elective (4 or 5 units)
  • Internship at the local, state or national level (12 units)
  • Research seminar (for all internship options) and capstone project (6 units).
No more than one upper division course can be applied toward both this minor and a major, or a minor in another department or program.

All courses in the minor must be taken for a letter grade, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
Successful completion of the minor is indicated on the student's transcript and diploma.
