I'm originally from the DC metro area and got my B.S. in Zoology from the
University of Maryland, College Park. While I was there, I did an
independent study project on the courtship behavior of Australian
bowerbirds, which means I watched hours and hours of videotaped courtships.
Currently, I'm a doctoral candidate in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Department. My research is on sexual harassment in a species of solitary
bee where females try to fight off every male they come into contact with,
even the males they mate with. I'm trying to find out if males are
actually harassing the females or if females are just fighting off males to
make sure that their eventual mate is the strongest, toughest male in the
population. Don't ask me if they make honey, though. I get asked that all
the time, but only social bees make honey.
I've also spent the last few years as the TA for LS1 and LS15 as well as
upper level courses in Animal Behavior and Ecology, and I helped develop
the discussion sections for EEB 100.
