James Winter
Advises students in: Philosophy, Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Pre-Health
Hi! My name is James Winter and this is my fourth year as a counseling assistant
for the College of Letters and Science.
I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and did my undergraduate work at Hampshire College in Amherst,
Massachusetts, where I concentrated in philosophy and legal studies. I then began my graduate career
at Columbia University before coming to UCLA. I have been a teaching assistant and instructor in the
philosophy department at UCLA, and also a teaching fellow for the GE Cluster course “History of Modern
Thought.” I am currently a doctoral candidate in the philosophy department, and I also teach
philosophy at Santa Monica College.
Two of my interests outside of the academic world are pocket billiards and cycling. After graduating
from Hampshire College in 1989 I played pool semi-professionally for three years. I also competed in the
ACUI National Collegiate Championships where I won the regional four years in a row, and finished in the
top four nationally all four years, placing second twice. I also enjoy cycling and raced for the UCLA
cycling team for two years.
In addition to being a veteran of the graduate school application process, I have also been through
the law school application process, and I would be happy to talk to you about either.
If you have any questions about grad school, law school, philosophy, or academics at UCLA feel free to
email me at jwinter@college.ucla.edu
