Eligibility:
To be eligible for excess units, you must meet ALL of the following conditions:
- Be in good academic standing
- Have a cumulative GPA > 3.0
- Have earned a GPA of > 3.0 in at least 12 units during the last quarter completed.
If you do not have an established UC GPA (i.e., you are an entering student), you are not eligible for excess units
until you have established a UC GPA.
Requesting Excess Units:
:If you meet the eligibilty requirements, you may be approved for up to 22 units at either Window 1 or Window 2.
If you would like to enroll in more than 22 units you should come to Window 2 where the full-time counselor
may either approve your request on the spot or ask you to file a cream-colored excess unit petition (see below).
Petitioning for Excess Units:
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, you may submit a petition for Excess units at either Window 1 or Window 2.
- Petition turn-around time is 1-2 days
- Students should check the status of the petition on MyUCLA to see if it is approved or denied, or requires further
information or action
Summer Session
URSA will allow L&S students to enroll in a total of 18 units for summer. If you wish to exceed 18 units, you must meet the following criteria:
Eligibility:To be eligible for excess summer units, you must meet ALL of the following conditions:
- Be in good academic standing
- Have a cum GPA of > 3.0
- Have earned a GPA of > 3.0 in at least 12 units during the last quarter completed.
Requesting excess units:
- You may apply for extra summer units once Winter grades have been posted.
- If you meet the eligibility requirements, you may be approved for up to 22 units at either Window 1 or Window 2.
- If you want more than 22 summer units, you should come to Window 2. The full-time
counselor may either approve your request on the spot or ask you to file a cream-colored excess unit petition (see below)
Petitioning for Excess Summer Units: If you do not meet the eligibility criteria or request more than 22
units, you need to wait until the end of the winter term to petition for excess units either at Window 1 or 2

PLEASE NOTE: The 2005-2007 UCLA catalog indicates that up to 20 excess units will be approved if a student has obtained a 3.0 GPA in the preceding term. Current Letters & Science excess unit policy is more restrictive than the catalog and we will request that Registrars update the electronic version of the catalog to reflect current policy.
