Beinecke Memorial Scholarship


For Juniors Planning Graduate Study in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences

UCLA juniors who demonstrate outstanding intellectual and scholastic achievement, show commitment to their field of study, and plan to pursue a Master's Degree or Ph.D in the arts, humanities or social sciences may apply for this scholarship. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Award:
$34,000 for graduate study

Eligibility:
In order to be considered for UCLA nomination, you must:

1) Be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. national
2) Be a junior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree on a full-time basis ("junior" is defined as a student who has one more year of undergraduate study after the year of application)
3) Have a 3.8 overall GPA or better
4) Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service
5) Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid
6) Intend to pursue a graduate degree in the arts, humanities, or social sciences

Nomination for a Beinecke Scholarship:
You cannot apply directly for a Beinecke Scholarship. You must be nominated by UCLA. UCLA can nominate one student. In order to be considered for UCLA nomination, you must meet all of the eligibility requirements listed above and submit TWO SETS containing all five of the following items:
1) A completed 2009-2010 Beinecke Scholarship Application Form (one page) -- see instructions below
2) A current resume
3) A personal statement of 1000 words or fewer describing your background, interests, plans for graduate study, and career aspirations. The statement should include a discussion of some experiences and ideas that have shaped those interests, plans, and aspirations.
4) A completed financial aid summary -- see instructions below
5) An unofficial copy of your UCLA transcript and unofficial transcripts from any other colleges or universities attended

No letters of recommendation are required at this point (three letters will be required only if you are selected as the UCLA nominee).

Prepare two sets of the items above and deliver both sets to Honors Programs, A311 Murphy Hall, by the UCLA NOMINATION DEADLINE:

Instructions to obtain your Financial Aid Summary
If you are a current UCLA student or have graduated within one year you may access your Financial Aid Summary from the URSA website. Under the Financial section select "Financial Aid Summary/Awards" and choose the most recent "Award Period". Earlier graduates may access financial aid information from the FAFSA website. Please submit 2 copies of this documentation with your application.

Instructions for accessing and completing the 2009-2010 Beinecke Application Form
If you use Microsoft Word 97 or higher, you can download a copy of the 2009-2010 Beinecke Application Form.

  • Click on the link below.
  • When the dialog box prompts "What would you like to do with this file?" choose either "Open it" to view the Application Form, or "Save it to disk". You must save your Application Form, either to your hard drive, to a 3-1/4", ZIP, or RW CD-ROM, in order to complete and print it out.
  • You will be using an active word document. This format allows applicants to type their answers directly onto the document itself. Please fill-in your answers, allowing yourself as much space as you require, and do not make any changes to the original Application for Nomination Form.
  • Please remember to save your 2009-2010 Beinecke Application Form frequently to prevent any possible loss of information.
