These are the College Honors requirements for students who entered UCLA as
Freshmen. If you entered UCLA as a Transfer Student your requirements are different, so please refer to the requirements for
Transfer Students.
Participating in College Honors does not necessarily mean you must take extra courses in addition to those that are already required. By careful planning Honors coursework can be overlapped with major, general education, and departmental honors requirements. Please make an appointment with an Honors Counselor for help with your program planning.
For students who entered UCLA as Freshmen there are two ways to pursue College Honors:
- Coursework Plan A: Students plan their own honors coursework in order to graduate with College Honors
- Research/Thesis Plan B: Students pursue both Departmental Honors and College Honors. Although there are required courses for Departmental Honors you still have much flexibility when choosing your honors courses.

Grade Requirement
You must receive a letter grade of B or better in all your honors courses. However, you can apply a limited number of units towards your honors progress for some mandatory P/NP courses (e.g. Fiat Lux seminars, graduate courses, etc.). You must receive a "P" grade and a "back-up" grade, if necessary, and then you must petition for the course to count towards your honors progress. For a list of these mandatory P/NP honors courses please consult the Honors Masterlist.
College Honors Minimum Progress
Your records will be reviewed after each Spring quarter based on the chart below. To remain in the program you must complete a minimum of 2 honors courses (8 units) per academic year. However, in most cases, the completion of more than two honors courses per academic year will be required in order to ensure completion of College Honors by the time of graduation. In addition, you must meet the minimum overall GPA requirement which corresponds to your unit total in the following chart.
