Welcome to Honors Programs

Incoming Freshmen

How to Qualify
All incoming freshmen must be admitted into the UCLA College of Letters & Science in order to qualify for admission into the College Honors Program. (Students admitted to the following schools are not eligible for our program at this time: School of Arts and Architecture, School of Theater, Film, and Television, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and School of Nursing.)

All students who wish to join the College Honors Program must apply by submitting the online MyUCLA application by the deadline.

There are two ways you may qualify for the College Honors Program - by GPA and Test Scores OR by Class Rank:

  1. Your GPA and Test Scores (as reported on your UC application):
    Fall 2013 Freshman Admits*
    • You must have at least a 4.1 GPA (*weighted, capped)
      AND
an SAT score of at least 2080 or an ACT score of at least 31

  2. Your Class Rank:
    • You must rank within the top 3% of your graduating class. We will require that you mail to us an official verification of your rank.

It is important that you meet one of the two requirements above. Also, please note that meeting the minimum requirements above does not guarantee admission to the program.

*UCLA Honors Programs reserves the right to modify or adjust its admission requirements.

How to Apply
Essay: You will be asked to submit a 250 word essay on a specific topic using the online MyUCLA Honors Application.

MyUCLA Application: Log-on to MyUCLA and click on the "Honors Application" link found under "My Features." Follow the directions below according to the admissions criteria you will be using to qualify for the College Honors program (only one of the two categories below will apply):

  1. Your GPA and Test Scores
    • MyUCLA verifies your GPA and Test Scores through data from UCLA Admissions (Honors Programs does not collect test scores directly nor calculate incoming students' GPAs). Therefore, you will only be prompted to enter your essay before you submit your application.
    • No additional verification is needed

  2. Your Class Rank
    • Enter your essay and submit your application
    • In addition to your essay MyUCLA will prompt you to mail verification of your class rank to our office. You must submit one of these two forms of verification: 1) An official school transcript that indicates your rank, or 2) A letter from a school official, on school letterhead, stating your rank.
    • Please mail your Class Rank verification directly to our office at the following address, postmarked by your deadline date (below). Please make sure that your UCLA ID number is included when you make arrangements with your school to send us your records directly (the absence of the UCLA ID number significantly delays the processing of the application).

Application Deadlines
The deadline to apply online through MyUCLA for Fall 2013 Freshman Admits is midnight of Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Due to unforeseen computer and network mishaps, students should apply well ahead of the posted deadline, as late applications will not be accepted. If you were admitted to UCLA on the day of our application deadline (or after our application deadline has passed), please contact our office immediately. You may contact us by phone at (310) 825-1553 or email if you encounter difficulties sending your application. Please don't forget to include your UCLA ID number.

Check the status of your application
For your own records, print a copy of the verification page that appears immediately after you submit your application. The status of your application must indicate "Pending." (Note: The status page looks the same as the application page, with exception of the first few lines that verify that the application was received.)

Check the results of your application
Results may be checked on MyUCLA (through "Honors Application") beginning Saturday, June 1, 2013, at 5:00pm. Please print out a copy of your decision letter for your records. Unfortunately, we cannot release results before the stated release date.

Please note that in compliance with records privacy regulations, we do not discuss student records over the phone, nor do we disclose information about a student's status or records to any person outside of the student (including parents, counselors, teachers, and guardians).

Good luck and we hope to meet with you soon!

*Weighted, Capped: As mentioned on the UC application, only grades from the 10th and 11th grades are used for GPA calculation. Therefore, your "weighted, capped" GPA is capped at a maximum of eight semesters of honors/AP/IP or CL courses from the Academic Subject Requirements (A-G) for the 10th and 11th grades only. For more details about the A-G requirements, please refer to the UCLA Admissions website. Please note that the UCLA Honors Programs Office does NOT calculate applicants' GPAs to fit into the "unweighted," "uncapped," and "weighted, capped" GPA categories. The "weighted, capped" GPA information used by Honors for incoming freshmen is pulled from the UCLA Admissions database, based on records submitted to that office.
