Goldwater Scholarship

For Sophomores and Juniors Planning Graduate Study in Mathematics, Engineering, and the Sciences

Outstanding UCLA sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering are invited to apply for the Goldwater Scholarship.

The Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards up to 300 merit-based educational scholarships to college sophomores and juniors throughout the United States.

Award:
Each scholarship will cover eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to $7,500 annually. Sophomore level nominees will be eligible for two years of support and junior level nominees for one year of support.

Eligibility:
In order to be considered for UCLA nomination you must

1) Be a sophomore or junior pursuing a bachelor's degree on a full-time basis. "Sophomore" is defined as a student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2010. "Junior" is defined as a student who plans one more year of full-time undergraduate study beginning September 2010
2) Be enrolled in an undergraduate field of study that will lead to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering (please note: pre-med students are eligible only if planning to enter a joint MD/PhD program with the goal of a research rather than a clinical career)
3) Have a college grade point average of at least 3.0
4) Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or a U.S. national

Nomination for a Goldwater Scholarship:
You cannot apply directly for a Goldwater Scholarship. You must be nominated by UCLA. Up to four students can be nominated. In order to be considered for UCLA nomination, you must meet all of the eligibility requirements listed above and follow the steps below:
1) Log on to the Goldwater Scholarship website.
2) On the home page, click on "APPLY NOW."
3) Fill out the Goldwater Application (except the section on "COURSEWORK"- items 21a-23g) up to and including "RECOMMENDERS" but do not list recommenders' email addresses. Letters of recommendation should not be included at this stage; you need only list the names and departmental/organizational affiliations of the three individuals you expect to write for you if you are nominated. Do not hit the electronic submit button at the end of the application.
4) To print your application, go to the left tab that says "REVIEW/PRINT/SUBMIT" and hit "PRINT." Then go to the top right and hit "PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION." Print your application and close the application window.
5) Click on "Logout" in the left margin; then click on "Candidacy Information and Instructions."
6) ESSAY: Go directly to #3 for information on completing the essay. Write your essay according to the instructions and print it to be submitted with your printed application. Please handwrite your student ID number, email address, and cell phone number on the front of your application before submitting.
7) Obtain a copy of your unofficial UCLA transcript or DPR. Transfer students should also get an unofficial copy of their transcript(s) from their transfer institution(s).
8) Make two copies of your application, essay, and transcript(s)/DPR and deliver both sets to Honors Programs, A311 Murphy Hall, by the UCLA NOMINATION DEADLINE:
