HC 70A: Genetic Engineering in Medicine, Agriculture, and Law with Bob Goldberg | The College of Letters and Science and Gold Shield Alumnae of UCLA are very pleased to announce a series of courses offered through the Honors Collegium and taught by recipients of the Gold Shield Faculty Prize. The Prize, established by Gold Shield in 1986 in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the founding of that organization, recognizes and rewards UCLA professors who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in undergraduate teaching and research or creative activity. Recipients of the award to date (in alphabetical order) are Professors Jeffrey Alexander, Albert Braunmuller, Patricia Greenfield, Robert Goldberg, Michael Jung, Peter Narins, J. William Schopf, and Uptal Banerjee. Gold Shield will provide substantial financial support for Gold Shield Faculty Prize recipients to prepare and teach an innovative lecture-discussion class that will bring leading research ideas into the classroom for general education students. Gold Shield funds will also be used to support Teaching Assistants and the organization will work closely with the College to promote the availability of the courses to all UCLA undergraduates. In 2002 – 2003 the Gold Shield Faculty Prize Courses will be taught by Professors Patricia Greenfield and Robert Goldberg. Gold Shield active members are UCLA alumnae who have served their university, communities, and professions with distinction. The organization’s roots are firmly imbedded in a tradition of service to UCLA. The group has contributed more than one million dollars to the UCLA Alumni Association’s Scholarship Program; provides funds for the UCLA Oral History Program; provides docents for tours of the Powell Library; and has raised the Gold Shield Faculty Prize endowment which has climbed to more than $400,000 and generates a $30,000 prize biennially. |
