Student Research Program
Student research provides an almost unparalleled opportunity in a research university for undergraduates
to interact with mentoring faculty. The Student Research Program (SRP)
puts together faculty seeking research assistance and students seeking research experience in a formal way that results in
transcript notation for students and the obvious intellectual advantage
of their engaging in significant library and laboratory research first hand.
We believe that research
should be a part of every Honors student’s experience at UCLA. Beginning Fall
1999 participation in SRP is noted on the transcript and carries from 1-4 units, depending on the arrangement made with the professor
and the number of hours worked. College Honors students may apply up to 4 units of SRP (Hnrs 99, 101s, Dept 99) towards their honors
progress even though these are not graded units. Please note, however, that SRP units do not apply to the Honors Collegium course requirement
in College Honors.
From Fall 1999 through Fall 2004, SRP were titled "Hnrs 99" and honors units were assigned automatically.
Beginning Winter 2005 SRPs are now titled as the department name and number “99”. For example, an SRP in the Statistics Department would be
titled “Statistics 99: Student Research Program”. Honors units for SRPs beginning Winter 2005 must be petitioned (see instructions below).
Where should you go to find out about SRP? Visit the SRP Office in one of two Undergraduate
Research Centers: Life Science and Physical Science OR Social Science and Humanities.
How to receive honors credit for SRP (beginning Winter 2005):
College Honors students who have not met the 4 unit maximum and who wish to apply their SRPs for honors credit must
email the Honors office with the request. For confidentiality reasons,
only requests from email addresses registered on URSA online will be processed. If you are unsure if you have an authorized email address
log-on to URSA online and check your “Address Information”.
Please title your email “SRP Request” and include the following information:
- Your name
- Your UID number
- Course title (Example: Statistics 99)
- Your grade (you must have received a P grade in order to receive honors credit)
- Quarter in which the SRP was taken
It will take approximately 2 weeks to process your request and for your honors credit to update on your MyUCLA Honors Progress page.
Please note that credit for SRPs will be applied as elective honors units, not Honors Collegium units. Contact the Honors office if you have any questions.
