Welcome to Honors Programs

Honors Seminars 89 and 189

Beginning the Winter 2004 quarter, Honors Discussions, now to be called Honors Seminars, will be administered through individual departments rather than the Honors Programs office. These "Honors Seminars" (course number "89") or "Advanced Honors Seminars" (course number "189"), are one-unit adjuncts to the primary lecture course and will be offered on a graded or P/NP basis.

The Honors Content notation on the transcript will appear automatically under the one-unit adjunct. A sample DPR/transcript notation will look like this:

POL SCI 189 HNRS POL SCI 120                      IP  1.0
                HONORS CONTENT

College Honors Students enrolled in an Honors Seminar who receive a grade of B or better in both the main course and the adjunct seminar may apply both the one unit adjunct and the units of the primary course to their units towards graduation with College Honors (College Honors students seeking CH progress should therefore opt to take the Honors Seminar for a letter grade). The main course and the adjunct seminar must be taken concurrently.

For example: College Honors students who complete Classics 10 with a letter grade of B or better in both the lecture (which is five units) and the adjunct seminar (which is one unit) will receive 6 units of honors credit towards their College Honors progress:

           CLASSICS 10     03F     Seminar (89/189)     5     A
           CLASSICS 89     03F     Seminar (89/189)     1     A+

For all students who take an Honors Seminar, the one-unit adjunct is not included as part of the maximum allowable units towards graduation so students need not fear exceeding their unit maximum.

It is the department that is responsible for creating the Honors Seminar. Once agreed upon, the professor and the department will work together in setting up the 89 or 189 (directions for Departments). Students can also aid in the process by referring either the professor or the departmental advisor to our Departmental FAQs section.
