CARE Science, Engineering and Math (SEM) Summer Research Program

The CARE SEM Summer Research Program is a 10-week opportunity for UCLA undergraduates to undertake research with a UCLA faculty. If the student does not already have a faculty mentor, the student will be matched with a mentor that fits with the student's interests.

In addition to working 40 hours per week in the laboratory, the program features seminars on topics such as the nature of academic life, career opportunities in science, engineering and mathematics, and applying to graduate school. Participants also attend workshops that provide practical information on such academic topics as how to write a personal statement, how to give a research presentation, and GRE test preparation. Students are given an opportunity to meet informally with UCLA faculty members and graduate students and to participate in many cultural and enrichment activities.

At the end of the program, each student is required to give a poster presentation describing his/her summer research project at an undergraduate research conference held at UCLA. Many previous participants have presented their summer research posters at national conferences and professional meetings. Upon completion of the CARE SEM Summer Research Program, participants will be better prepared and motivated to attend graduate school and to pursue research careers.

The Deadline For Receipt of All Materials is March 15, 2012.

ELIGIBILITY

The CARE SEM Summer Research Program is sponsored by the NIH Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity. A long-term goal of the UCLA CARE SEM Summer Research Program is to broaden and expand the pool of scholars committed to careers in teaching and/or research. Therefore, special consideration is given to applicants whose socioeconomic background, access to educational opportunities and other life experiences suggest that they would especially benefit from this type of program, and who demonstrate potential to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the research professions or teaching and research in higher education.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be UCLA students entering their junior or senior year with a cumulative G.P.A. of > 2.90. Students interested in pursuing degrees in medicine (MD) or dentistry (DDS) are not eligible for this program unless they also plan to pursue a Ph.D.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

Participants are required to complete the entire ten week program. The research objectives of the program are substantial (approximately 40 hours per week in the lab) and require full-time student commitment. Participants must attend all required workshops, seminars, social events and weekly student/staff meetings. At the end of the program, each participant is required to give a poster presentation describing his/her research and to also complete a post-program survey.
