NIH Biomedical Science Enrichment Program (BISEP)
Summer Program for UCLA StudentsProgram Purpose
The NIH Biomedical Science Enrichment Program (BISEP) prepares students for upper division science coursework and undergraduate research. The program consists of a Biotechnology Lecture and Laboratory, Course on Reading and Writing Science, Career Development Workshops and Seminars, Group/Lab Meetings, Laboratory visits, Career Guidance. Seminars and Workshop topics include, but are not limited to, undergraduate and graduate/professional program panels, career opportunities in biomedical science, and applying to research programs. Upon completion of BISEP, participants will be prepared to commence undergraduate research. Eligibility
Applicants should be UCLA students who have completed their freshmen year by June 2012 in a life science, chemistry or biochemistry major (other majors are welcome to apply) at UCLA and who will be entering their sophomore year Fall 2012.This program is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health to increase the numbers of underrepresented students pursuing research-based careers:
Students interested in pursuing graduate or dual degrees (Masters, Ph.D., MD/PhD) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Program Expectations
Participants are required to complete the entire 6 week program. The expectations of the program are substantial and require full-time student commitment. Students may not be enrolled simultaneously in Summer School while participating in BISEP. Each participant must attend all required activities (formal and informal). At the end of the program, all participants are required to give a presentation and complete a program evaluation.Parking & Housing
If needed, a 6-week summer parking permit can be purchased from UCLA Parking Services, and will be available in late April/early May on a first-come, first-served basis. Housing is not provided for participants in this program. 1. List any employment/work-study positions, honors, awards, prizes or recognition over the past two years (indicate dates and duration).
2. List extracurricular and community activities you have participated in during the past two years (indicate dates and duration).
3. What other attributes or personal experiences have you had that you feel we should know about in considering this application?
4. Please describe any previous research experiences you have had (if any). List location, dates, supervisor and a brief description of the project.
5. How do you expect this program to contribute to your professional development and career preparation?
DeadlineThe deadline for receipt of all application materials and supporting documents for Summer 2012 is May 17, 2012 at 12pm . Some students may be invited to an interview at the end of May. All students will be notified of their program status by June 1, 2012
