Scholarship Description:

Minority Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Research (MARC U*STAR)

The MARC U*Star Program is an NIH funded honors program intended to prepare highly able minority students for graduate programs at outstanding universities throughout the United States.

The MARC U*Star Program pays partial tuition and provides students with stipends to undertake research projects in UCLA faculty laboratories during the academic year. Students are also funded to participate in laboratory research at other universities during the summer. Trainees are encouraged to give oral and poster presentations of their research at local and national conferences. Trainees also receive special mentoring and preparation via counseling, journal clubs, workshops and honors courses.

MARC trainees are expected to engage in research during their 2 year appointment to the program. Trainees are required to be in their labs for an average of 15 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours for 10 weeks during the summer. Students are encouraged to do research at another campus at least one summer. Trainees must also take a course in Research Ethics and Responsibility, the GRE exam, and 16 units of honors credit.
