Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Mission Statement:

The fundamental objective of MMUF is to increase the number of minority students, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who will pursue PhDs in core fields in the arts and sciences. The program aims to reduce over time the serious underrepresentation on the faculties of individuals from certain minority groups, as well as to address the attendant educational consequences of these disparities. UCLA Program and Selection Criteria:

The UCLA MMUF is a two-year program (AY 2009-2010; AY 2010-2011) that includes intensive undergraduate research, completion of a senior thesis project, and preparation for graduate school. Students interested in applying for the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship must meet the following criteria: How To Apply:

2) Complete the UCLA Mellon Mays Program Supplemental Application, available online here, and in the Undergraduate Research Center for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, A334 Murphy Hall.


Program Overview:

First Year: Junior Standing ($2,000 Fellowship/$3500 Summer Stipend)

Fall Quarter: Winter Quarter: Spring Quarter: Summer Institute: Second Year: Senior Standing ($6,000 Scholarship)

Fall Quarter: Winter Quarter: Spring Quarter: In addition to Fellowships, stipends, and scholarships, Mellon Mays Fellowship Scholars will be eligible for funding to pay back loans accrued during their undergraduate studies. The Loan Payment schedule will be worked out with the UCLA Financial Aid Office in accordance with Mellon guidelines.
