About the SRP Student Research Program
UCLA’s entry-level Student Research
Program (SRP Course 99 in all departments) helps you obtain
research skills, define your academic interests and objectives,
and become part of the larger university research community.
Participation suited to lower-division and first quarter
transfer students, SRP allows you early in your academic career
to participate in research or engage in scholarly or creative
efforts under the direction of a faculty mentor. After
completing SRP, many undergraduates seek greater engagement in
research and creative activity, and eventually complete
independent study or honors thesis courses. For more
information about SRP, plan to attend one of our SRP workshops.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there research opportunities for
undergraduates in the humanities and social science?
UCLA is a research institution which means
that all faculty are expected to pursue research interests in
addition to their teaching duties. Research in the humanities
and social sciences takes many forms and occurs in a variety of
settings from archival work in the library or on the internet
to observational studies of social interactions to field work
to data analysis. Creative and artisitic projects also
constitute research at a research university.
Who is eligible to serve as an SRP (Course
99) or 199 course mentor?
Anyone who holds a teaching position at
UCLA is eligible to serve as a research mentor for courses 99
or 199. Faculty who teach in UCLA’s professional schools
are also eligible. Graduate students in the humanities and
social sciences may also serve as Humanities and Social Science
SRP mentors with the Center Director’s approval.
How do I find an SRP progect to become
involved in?
Most students involved in SRP assist the
mentor on the mentor’s current project. You may also
pursue an area of your own interest as long as you have a
mentor guiding you through the process. The URC will post any
requests from mentors for undergraduate research assistants;
however, most students find projects on their own. At the SRP
Orientation Workshops, the URC Graduate Student Research
Mentors can assist you in your search for a project.
Where do I get an SRP or 199 course
contract?
All SRP and 199 course contracts are
initially created online. If you are participating in SRP for
the first time, you must attend an SRP Orientation Workshop
where you will receive full details about the enrollment
protocol.
What is the deadline for enrolling in SRP?
Signed contracts for the Humanities and
Social Sciences are due in A334 Murphy Hall at 3pm the Friday
of Week Two for each quarter you wish to participate. Summer
contracts are due at the enrollment deadline for Summer
Session.
